Title: Lessons from my 25-year epilepsy journey in India!

Epilepsy care at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi and several other Indian hospitals and Institutes may not seem very different from epilepsy care anywhere else in the world. However, this changes dramatically as soon as one steps even a few kilometers beyond most big cities especially in Central and Northern India. The treatment gaps worsen the farther one moves from quarternary and tertiary care that is largely restricted to urban areas. It is not unusual to come upon epilepsy patients living with untreated, active epilepsy for decades in Gumla Jharkhand, or Chattarpur Orissa, or Gauriganj UP or Begusarai Bihar. Change has started to happen but progress is slow. I will share my perspective derived from the unique privilege of having worked both at AIIMS, New Delhi and also in hundreds of outreach clinics in the Indian hinterland over more than 25 years. I continue to be optimistic and hopeful that we will together find solutions for our patients sooner rather than later.
